Both figures are the same person — the same body, photographed in a mirror, edited into a single frame. Most viewers do not recognize this upon first looking. That misrecognition is the piece. Inspired by Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity, The Swap asks how much of gender is performance if the same body can be read as two different genders depending on clothing and posture alone. It does not answer the question. It poses it.
